The project Roma Teaching & Training (Roma T&T) is a European project (funded by the Lifelong Learning Programme – Key Activity 1: Roma Multilateral Projects & Networks) which deals with the issue of the absence of pre-school education for the Roma children.
The project, which was coordinated by Action Synergy, developed and tested a model for the organization of pre-school centers especially designed for Roma children that prepared them (in the format of a nursery school) to be better prepared to integrate in the school environment.
The activities of these centers took into consideration the specific cultural background of the Roma children and were supervised by two intercultural intermediators, one Roma and one non-Roma.
The project has also organized workshops for the training of the intercultural intermediators in order to ensure that these intercultural intermediators that would supervise the Roma children and facilitate their activities in the pre-school centers are properly trained. This training was organized with face to face seminars as well as with e-learning courses that have enabled distance training of intercultural intermediators all over Europe.
The project consortium was constituted of 5 partners from 4 countries (Greece, Italy, Spain, and Hungary) and represented all the major stakeholders in the sector.
During the piloting phase, 80 children from the partner countries have attended for 6 months these pre-school centers and were better prepared to face the school environment.
The project was implemented in the period 2011 – 2012.
