The project School Education for Roma Integration (SEDRIN) is a project, coordinated by Action Synergy, which was co-funded by the European Union Lifelong Learning (Comenius) programme and had as a main aim to empower the Roma women to be involved actively with the support of their children at school in order to fight against early school leaving of the Roma children.
In order to achieve these objectives, SEDRIN:
– Organised a research on the learning cultures and the training needs of the Roma women in the partner countries.
– Developed a methodology on the training of the Roma women in issues related with the support of the educational performance of their children.
– Organised training sessions for the Roma women in all the partner countries.
– Coordinated the cooperation between primary schools and Roma women with specific activities organized in the classroom and outside the classroom.
In the framework of the seminars that have been organized for SEDRIN project, a total of 87 Roma women were trained and 144 Roma children were supported.
Action Synergy was also responsible for the implementation of the training seminars in Greece. It has organised literacy and numeracy classes and it has also covered subjects such as:
– Marriages at a very young age
– General health issues
– Vaccinations
– Equality of the between genders
The training was also supported with practical activities such as visiting doctors (with the support of “Medecins Du Monde-Greece”) dental check-ups, where the dentists explained the importance of good oral hygiene and demonstrated to the children and their mothers how to brush their teeth properly. Most of them suffered from tooth decay, gum disease and generally bad teeth. They also attended two health training sessions organised in cooperation with the Hellenic Centre for Disease Control and Prevention – KEELPNO, Ministry of Health.
The project was implemented from 2012 to 2014 by a consortium of 7 partners in 7 European countries (Greece, Cyprus, Romania, Italy, Spain, Hungary and Portugal). See partners.
